My dad never comes to my bedroom, and today was no exception. There's a buzzer on the wall he can use to summon me. In fact, ever since mom left, I've just stopped locking my door. There's no point. In his parlance, "We'll talk later" means "I don't have time to talk with you right now, and I'm probably not going to make time at all, so please get out of my way."
Since he never actually comes to my room, he hasn't realized that there's a grate leading directly down to the kitchen. It's fairly easy to hear every word. My mom had this figured out, and would work inside jokes into her conversations in the kitchen. When talking with my grandma, she'd add obscure facts about the chinchilla (our favorite animal) into their discussion of garden design. With my dad, if it looked like an argument was brewing, she'd say "Let's take this out." Presumably, those discussions would continue in the relative safety of their first-floor bedroom.
But dad just never got it, especially as all the repairs on the house have always been done either by mom or by hired help, meaning the grate never caught his attention. So the discussion of gay marriage leaked upstairs, and I had to hear my dad talking about how to strip every non-heterosexual in America of their fundamental rights. He didn't put it that way, of course. His position was that being 'gay' is a type of mental illness, which is all very sad, but let's not encourage it in the population.
I could hear the unease in Colleen's voice. Had she made me so easily? Many of my female friends at school figured it out fairly quickly, but they're worlds away from Colleen. She seemed pretty Molly, but maybe she was worldlier than she looked.
"Senator, there's something I think you should know."
This got his attention. He actually sounded panicked, though I wasn't sure why. "Colleen. Is everything ok with you?"
"No, it's fine. I've been careful."
"Well then?"
"I saw a letter that Dallin wrote in the mailbox."
That snake! Unfortunately, I had made it easy for her by sealing it with tape because I'd used a fancy envelope, the kind you couldn't just lick. Obviously, that was a poor move.
"It was to Michael, a friend at school."
"And?"
"I think that Dallin has feelings for this young man, sir."
"Oh, Colleen. Things happen at boarding school, and young men get very close. I think you must be misreading this."
"Dallin specifically talks about being gay in the letter, sir."
"As an idea? Has anything happened between Dallin and this student?"
"No. He's quite firm on that point. I believe that Dallin thinks that he himself is gay."
There was a pause. "Do you think he'll act on it?"
"In my opinion, sir, he already has. After this letter, it's only a matter of time."
My dad sighed, but as usually, he came up with a plan almost immediately. "Well, we have to intervene quickly. I assume there's not time to send him to camp, so we'll just have to send him to a specialist who can help get these ideas out of his head.
